The Platax pinnatus, also known as the orbicular batfish or the pinnate batfish, is a species of marine fish that belongs to the family Ephippidae. They are native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. They have a distinctive shape, with a broad, disc-like body and a large, flat head. They are typically dark brown or black in color, with a white or silver ring around their eyes and a white or silver patch on their dorsal fin. They can grow up to 35 cm in length.

Platax pinnatus are found in a variety of marine habitats, including coral reefs, lagoons, and mangrove swamps. They are bottom dwellers that spend most of their time hiding in the reef, coming out to hunt at night. They are carnivorous and feed on small fish and crustaceans. They are also known for their ability to change color, which they do in response to changes in their environment or to communicate with other members of their species.

They are popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to their unique appearance and behavior. However, they require a large tank, with a sandy bottom and plenty of hiding places, and are suitable for experienced aquarists only.
