The Undulated Trigger (Balistapus undulatus), also called the orangelined/orangetailed triggerfish, has an emerald-to-olive body with wavy orange striping and a bold black spot near the tail. It’s a classic fish-only centerpiece triggerfish from Indo-Pacific reefs.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrols the rockwork and quickly picks a favorite cave or corner
- Uses strong, precise bites to tear and crush foods at feeding time
- Rearranges small pieces of aquascape while investigating the tank
- Makes audible grunting sounds, especially when active and alert
Provide a large tank with heavy, stable rockwork arranged into roomy caves so it can settle into a consistent route. Feed a varied meaty menu (such as shrimp, clam, squid, and krill), and include hard-shelled items at times to support natural tooth wear. It does best as the dominant fish with other robust, similarly sized fish that hold their space.
Is it normal for an Undulated Trigger to hide a lot right after introduction?
Yes—many settle in by staying close to a cave at first, then expand their patrol route as they learn the room and feeding schedule.
Will it mess with rockwork or frags even in a fish-only tank?
It’s common for them to test and shift loose items while exploring; most keepers plan for a locked-in aquascape and avoid small, unstable decorations.
Can an Undulated Trigger be trained onto pellets?
Often yes—once it recognizes pellets as food, some individuals take them readily, especially when offered consistently at the same spot.
How do you do tank maintenance without stressing the fish?
A consistent routine helps: feed first, use tools (tongs/scrapers) instead of hands when possible, and keep your movements steady and predictable.
Why does it sometimes chase specific tankmates more than others?
Keepers often notice it focuses on fish that enter its preferred lane or cave area; changing the aquascape routes can reduce repeated run-ins.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
