The Volitan Lionfish Miles (Pterois miles) is a large, striped lionfish with long dorsal spines and wide, fan-like pectoral fins that it uses to “corner” food in the water column. Often sold under common names like Miles Lionfish, Common Lionfish, Turkeyfish, or Devil Firefish, it’s a predator-style centerpiece fish for marine aquariums.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering and “perching” on rockwork, then gliding out into open water in short patrols
- Using its broad fins to position itself before a quick, suction-style strike at food
- Regular mouth “stretches” and fin displays as it settles into a daily routine
- A noticeable shift toward more activity when the room lights dim
Provide stable saltwater parameters, open swimming room, and multiple caves/overhangs so it can choose shaded resting spots. Offer a variety of marine-based meaty foods on a consistent schedule so it learns where feeding happens and responds quickly at mealtime.
Is it normal for a lionfish to “yawn” or stretch its mouth wide open?
Yes—many keepers observe frequent jaw-stretching as part of normal posture and feeding mechanics.
Will it learn to eat frozen foods from a feeding stick or tongs?
In many home aquariums it transitions quickly, and target-feeding helps keep meals consistent and controlled.
Can I keep more than one lionfish together?
Some hobbyists keep multiples successfully in large systems when each fish has its own resting areas and personal space.
Why does its color look darker (or lighter) at different times?
Color often shifts with lighting, mood, and pattern display, so day-to-day variation is common.
What’s the safest way to move one during maintenance?
Many aquarists prefer a rigid specimen container rather than a net, which keeps fins supported and reduces the chance of spine snagging.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
