The Panther Grouper (Cromileptes altivelis), also known as the humpback grouper, is a bold, high-bodied grouper recognized for its light base color and dark polka-dot pattern. As it settles in, it becomes a strong centerpiece predator that spends time near rockwork and cruises the open water when food is nearby.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short patrol loops around favorite caves and ledges, with quick bursts toward food
- A strong feeding response, including wide gaping strikes that pull food in fast
- Regular use of shaded areas under overhangs, then reappearing at the front glass
- Clear awareness of the room, often meeting you at feeding time
Provide a spacious aquascape with sturdy rock structure and open lanes for turning and cruising. Offer meaty marine foods (chunky frozen blends, shrimp, squid, and similar) in appropriately sized pieces, and keep filtration capacity strong to support heavy feeding. Plan tankmates around size and body depth so the grouper’s attention stays on prepared foods.
Can a Panther Grouper live with another Panther Grouper long-term?
In very large systems, some keepers report success, but many still choose to keep a single specimen so feeding stays simple and predictable.
Do the spots and overall look change as it grows?
Many hobbyists notice the contrast and pattern presentation shifts with growth and lighting, with adults often looking more grey and less crisp than juveniles while keeping the polka-dot theme.
Is it normal for a Panther Grouper to disappear into the rockwork for days or longer?
Yes—keepers commonly report extended settling in periods where it spends a lot of time in caves before becoming more front-and-center on a routine.
Why does it yawn or open its mouth wide even when it is not eating?
This is frequently observed and is often part of normal respiration and jaw movement; many owners notice it more when the fish is relaxed or anticipating food.
Do they accept pellets, or are frozen foods the main staple?
Many keepers have the easiest time starting with frozen meaty items and then mixing in soft pellets over time, rewarding any pellet takes during the first minute of feeding.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
