Hector’s Goby is a small sand-sifting goby that spends the day working across the bottom, picking through the sand surface for tiny foods. Its deep brown base color with thin yellow lines gives it a clean, high-contrast pattern that reads well in both nano reef and larger reef tanks.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short “patrol laps” along the substrate, stopping often to pick at sand grains and low rock
- Regular perching on rock edges, then quick darts to the next grazing spot
- A steady routine of bottom-foraging that continues between feedings
- Settling into the rockwork at lights-out and reappearing as the tank brightens
To succeed with this species, provide an established sand bed and live rock with natural film for constant grazing. Offer small frozen foods and fine pellets that reach the bottom, using a turkey baster if needed to place food near its foraging path. With stable reef parameters and peaceful tankmates, it stays active and consistently sifts the sand surface.
Does Hector’s Goby usually eat frozen and pellet foods right away?
Many spend most of the day grazing naturally, and they often do best when small foods are placed on the sand so they can find them while foraging.
Will it create sandstorms or bury frags like some sand-sifting gobies?
Hector’s Goby tends to do light, surface-level sifting rather than moving large mouthfuls of sand into piles.
Is it normal for it to “disappear” for parts of the day?
Yes—many wedge into rock gaps to rest, then resume bottom patrols once they’re on their usual routine.
Can it be kept with other bottom fish like watchman gobies or firefish?
In many mixed-reef setups it coexists well when each fish has its own preferred perching and resting areas.
Does it help with algae or film on rocks and sand?
Hobbyists commonly observe it picking at film on sand, rock, and glass as part of its all-day grazing pattern.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
