The Orangetail Blue Devil Damsel (Chrysiptera cyanea) is an electric-blue damselfish where males commonly show an orange tail while females stay solid blue. It’s an active reef fish that tends to claim a small section of rockwork and use nearby crevices as quick cover.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, fast swimming bursts followed by hovering near a favorite rock or cave
- Regular “patrol” laps around its chosen area, especially during the day
- A quick color shift darker when startled, then back to bright blue shortly after
- Confident feeding behavior—grabbing food from the water column and near the rocks
To help it settle in, provide rockwork with multiple caves and swim-throughs so it can choose a home base without crowding other fish. Offer a varied omnivore menu (meaty frozen foods plus quality pellets or flakes) in small portions once or twice daily. With a stable routine and consistent water conditions, this damsel stays active and visible in the display.
Is the orange tail guaranteed, and does it mean the fish is male?
No the orange tail coloration is most commonly seen on males, while females are typically solid blue. Tail color can also vary by collection region and maturity.
Why does it sometimes look darker or almost black?
It can darken quickly when it feels threatened or startled, especially if it wedges into a hole. Once it relaxes, the bright blue color returns.
Can I keep more than one Orangetail Blue Devil Damsel?
Many hobbyists have better results adding multiple juveniles at the same time so territories form more evenly. In larger aquariums with lots of rockwork, groups can spread out and establish separate “zones.”
Why was it peaceful at first, then started acting more territorial later?
As it becomes comfortable and fully settled, it often gets more consistent about defending its chosen area. This change can be gradual and show up weeks to months after introduction.
If I ever need to remove it, what usually works best?
Keepers often have success with simple baited traps (including DIY bottle-style traps) placed near its usual patrol route. Doing it when it’s focused on food tends to work faster than chasing it with a net.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
