The Red Stop Light Cardinal is a small, reef-safe cardinalfish with solid red coloration and an oversized dark eye. Native to Indonesian reefs, it’s often seen hovering in groups around coral heads and rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering in the water column under ledges, returning to the same “home” spot between feedings
- Groups facing into the flow together and spreading out slightly as a pecking order forms
- More activity near dusk and after lights-out, followed by a return to shelter
- Short, deliberate strikes at passing food rather than fast chasing
Provide branching rockwork, caves, or seagrass-style cover so it can station-keep close to shelter. Offer small meaty foods (mysis, brine, finely chopped seafood) plus quality pellets in several small feedings so every fish in the group gets a share. With peaceful community tankmates, this cardinal settles into a consistent routine and adds calm midwater movement to mixed reefs.
Do they actually “school” in a home aquarium?
They usually hover and travel as a loose group near shared cover, and the group often looks tighter when food is in the water.
Why does one fish stay slightly apart from the group?
As they sort out a hierarchy, individuals may choose separate perches a few inches away while still remaining part of the group.
Is it normal to see them tucked into an urchin or coral branches?
Yes—many keepers notice them using long-spined urchins, branching coral structures, or tight rock crevices as a daytime retreat.
How do I know if one is mouthbrooding?
Mouthbrooding males often show a noticeably “full” lower jaw and spend more time hovering near cover for a week or longer.
Can they eat very small tankmates?
They are peaceful with similarly sized fish, but any fish or crustacean small enough to fit in their mouth can be treated as food, especially after lights-out.
