The Mystery Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus ocellatus) is a reef-safe wrasse that spends its day hunting small crustaceans and nuisance hitchhikers, including commensal flatworms and pyramidellid snails. It shows a maroon-to-lavender body with thin pale bars, a yellow face with pink lines, and a bold eyespot near the tail.
What You’ll Observe:
- Quick patrols through rockwork, with short pauses to inspect holes and ledges
- Repeated “looping” routes around the reef as it checks the same areas each day
- Precise picking behavior as it pulls tiny prey from crevices
- A noticeable shift to more visible, open-water passes once it’s settled in
Provide a mature reef with plenty of live rock for cover plus a sandy bottom for natural resting behavior. Offer vitamin-enriched frozen mysis and brine along with other meaty foods and quality pellets so it can graze throughout the day.
Why did my Mystery Wrasse disappear right after I added it?
It’s common for them to stay deep in the rockwork at first and only show briefly during quiet periods. Many become reliably visible once they learn the tank’s feeding routine.
Do Mystery Wrasses need a lid even in a calm reef?
Many wrasses make fast dashes when startled or excited, and a tight-fitting cover helps keep them in the aquarium (and out of overflows).
Is it safe with cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, or small decorative shrimp?
They usually leave larger, established shrimp alone, but very small shrimp can be treated like food. If shrimp are a priority, choose larger specimens and let them establish first.
Can it be kept with other wrasses?
Keepers most often report the best results when it’s the only Pseudocheilinus in the tank. Mixing similar-looking wrasses can work in some setups, but tends to go best with careful introductions.
Will it become more territorial as it matures?
Many owners notice it gets more confident over time and patrols more deliberately. Stable rockwork with multiple “lanes” and hiding pockets helps spread activity out across the tank.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
