The Zebra Bar Goby (Ptereleotris zebra), also called the Zebra Barred Dartfish or Chinese Zebra Goby, is a slender, light-green dartfish marked with evenly spaced orange bars. It typically hovers just above the sand and makes quick dashes back to a favorite burrow when startled. Its calm, midwater presence fits well in peaceful community reef setups.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering in the water column, often facing into the flow as if “holding station”
- Short, fast darts to the same retreat under rockwork or rubble, then reappearing for food
- Pairs or small groups lining up together and moving as a loose shoal
- Quick strikes at drifting foods in the water column during feeding time
Provide open swimming room with a sandy bottom and a few low ledges or rubble piles where it can establish a bolt-hole. Offer small meaty foods like mysis, enriched brine, and finely chopped seafood, spread in the flow so each fish can grab pieces. If keeping more than one, introduce them together and use a secure lid or mesh top so they settle in confidently.
Is it normal for a Zebra Bar Goby to hide for days after being added?
Yes—many spend the first several days choosing a retreat and learning the tank’s routine. Consistent, gentle feeding in the same area usually brings them out more reliably.
Do Zebra Bar Gobies “burrow,” or do they just use caves?
Most use gaps under rockwork or rubble as a home base, and they may move a little sand to shape the entrance. Once they pick a spot, they tend to return to the same area repeatedly.
Why do they hover together in a line facing the same direction?
In a small group they often hold position in the current and orient the same way, especially when they feel settled. It’s a common water-column feeding posture for dartfish.
Can Zebra Bar Gobies lay eggs in a reef tank?
Pairs may deposit eggs in a protected spot near their retreat. In most mixed reefs the tiny larvae usually don’t survive without a separate rearing setup.
If a fish dies, will the group pick at it?
They are fast, opportunistic feeders and may scavenge once something has already died. Prompt removal keeps the tank stable and prevents repeated scavenging behavior.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
