The Ocellate Damsel (Pomacentrus vaiuli) is an Indo-Pacific damselfish with a blue-violet body, a yellow wash along the back and tail, and a small “eye spot” near the rear of the dorsal fin. It stays close to rockwork, adding constant, compact movement to reef and marine community aquariums.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering a few inches above a favorite rock ledge, then making quick dashes into open water
- A consistent “home base” that it returns to throughout the day
- Fast, confident feeding responses once it learns your routine
- Short display swims around its chosen area, especially during feeding time
Provide a rockscape with several small caves so it can choose a home base while still having open water for short sprints. Offer a mix of finely chopped meaty foods plus algae-based flakes or pellets, split into two feedings. In community tanks, it settles best when nearby fish have their own defined areas and you keep feeding stations spread out.
Does this damsel usually stay in one area?
Most keepers see it pick a favorite cave or ledge and patrol a small zone around it, returning to the same spot between swims.
Will its color pattern change as it grows?
Juveniles and adults can look a bit different in overall intensity, but the “ocellus” (eye spot) near the dorsal fin is a consistent feature people use for ID.
Can I keep more than one Ocellate Damsel?
Some hobbyists report success when multiple are added at the same time and the tank has several separate rock zones; the goal is to let each fish claim its own space.
What foods do hobbyists have the best long-term results with?
A rotating mix works well—small pellets or flakes with algae content, plus frozen foods like mysis or finely chopped seafood.
If I ever need to remove it, what works without tearing down the rockwork?
Many hobbyists pre-condition the fish to an acrylic trap by leaving it in place for a day or two and feeding only inside it; others have luck netting after lights-out using a dim red light.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
