The Panda Goby (Paragobius lacunicolus) is a tiny coral goby with black, white, and yellow patterning and a compact, stocky shape. It is often associated with branching SPS—especially Pocillopora—where it weaves through the branches and pauses to perch in place.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picks a favorite coral colony or tight rockwork pocket and returns to the same spot throughout the day
- Short “hop and perch” movement, with quick darts into branches and shaded areas
- Takes very small meaty foods from the water column and from gentle target feeding
- A calm, low-drama presence that stays close to cover even in peaceful community reefs
To help it settle in, provide branching structure (Pocillopora or similar shapes) plus a few shaded hideouts. Offer tiny meaty foods like finely minced mysis and brine shrimp in small portions so it can compete comfortably. Keep feeding areas low-flow so the food stays within reach.
Does it need a live Pocillopora coral to do well?
It often uses Pocillopora as a home base, but many aquarists have success by recreating that branching structure with rockwork and coral-safe hiding pockets.
Why did it “disappear” after I added it?
This species commonly settles deep into branches and shaded areas at first. Consistent, small feedings in the same spot usually brings it out more reliably over time.
Will it eat frozen foods, or does it need copepods/live food?
Many keepers start with very small foods (like baby brine or other tiny meaty options) and then work toward frozen once the fish recognizes a feeding routine. Keeping a mature tank with natural microfauna also helps.
Is it normal for it to sit in SPS branches all day?
Yes—perching and hovering inside branching corals is typical behavior for coral gobies. If it’s spending all day in one coral, that’s usually “home,” not a sign something is wrong.
How can I tell it’s truly Paragobius/Paragobiodon lacunicolus and not a different clown goby?
Ask the supplier for the scientific name on the invoice and compare adult size expectations and coloration. Many similar-looking coral/clown gobies are sold under mixed common names, so confirming the scientific name is the most reliable step.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
