The Bumblebee Goby (Amblyeleotris wheeleri) is a marine shrimp goby that helps keep a small area of sand turned over as it maintains a burrow under rockwork. Its banded red-brown and white pattern (often dotted with blue on the fins) is why it’s also sold as the Wheeler’s Shrimp Goby or “gorgeous prawn goby.” In a reef tank, it typically sets up at the burrow entrance and watches the open sand for passing food.

What You’ll Observe:

Holding position near a single “home base,” then making quick darts to grab food
Burrow activity that slowly reshapes the sand and rubble around one spot
If paired with a pistol shrimp, regular “lookout” behavior at the shared entrance
A short settling-in period where it spends more time near cover, then becomes more visible at feeding time

Provide a sand bed with a little rubble so it can establish a stable burrow location under secure rockwork. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, enriched brine, and finely chopped seafood) in a few smaller feedings so food reaches the bottom near its home area. With consistent feeding and a steady layout, it becomes a reliable, easy-to-observe burrow-dweller.

Do I need to keep this goby with a pistol shrimp?
No—many keepers successfully keep A. wheeleri alone, but adding a compatible pistol shrimp often brings out more natural burrow and “lookout” behavior.

How long does it usually take for a goby and pistol shrimp to pair up?
Some pairs connect quickly while others take a few days; once they choose the same burrow area, the partnership usually becomes consistent.

Why does it keep moving sand to the same spot?
That’s normal burrow maintenance—sand and small rubble get pushed and rearranged to reinforce the entrance and create a comfortable tunnel system.

Can I keep more than one shrimp goby in the same tank?
In larger systems, multiple shrimp gobies can work when each fish can claim its own burrow zone; many hobbyists have better results spacing them out with distinct rock-and-sand areas.

My goby hid and ignored food at first—is that normal?
Yes, a short “settling in” window is common; once it recognizes the feeding routine and feels established at a burrow, it typically feeds more openly.
