The Stars and Stripes Puffer (Arothron hispidus) is a large Indo-Pacific puffer known for a light tan-to-gray body covered in white spots and fine striping, with pale rings around the eyes. A darker “shoulder” patch near the pectoral fin helps distinguish it from similar Arothron puffers. In predator and FOWLR setups, it often becomes an interactive show fish that learns your feeding routine.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruising the front glass, then hovering to “watch” activity in the room
- Inspecting rockwork with short, deliberate stops and quick turns
- Meeting you at the surface at feeding time and following a feeding stick
- Using strong beak-like bites to break down larger, meaty foods
Provide open swimming room with sturdy rockwork for exploration, and keep equipment protected so curious bites stay focused on food. Offer a varied menu of meaty items (like shrimp, squid, and clam), including shell-on foods or clams on the half shell to help naturally wear the beak. With consistent feeding cues and calm tankmates, it settles into a steady, recognizable daily routine.
Why does it follow me and “beg” at the surface?
Many keepers report this species quickly associates people with food and will patrol the front glass at your usual feeding times.
Is it normal to hear clicking or grinding sounds?
Yes—puffers may click or grind their beak while testing rock, shells, or crunchy foods.
What’s the easiest way to help keep the beak worn down?
Rotate in hard foods such as clams on the half shell and shell-on shrimp so it gets regular natural wear while eating.
Can I hand-feed it safely?
A feeding stick or tongs works well and helps it learn a consistent target without confusing fingers with food.
Do the spots and stripes change as it grows?
Patterns can shift with age, often with more defined rings and markings around the eyes and shoulder area.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
