The Two Spot Blenny (Ecsenius bimaculatus) is an algae-grazing blenny that spends its day picking at film algae on live rock and other hard surfaces. It’s a small, perch-and-peek fish with large eyes, a darker band through the upper body, and two distinct spots on the belly area.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short “hop” swims between favorite perches, followed by long pauses to watch the tank from a ledge
- Regular grazing passes across rockwork, with quick bites at the surface as it moves along
- A consistent “home base” in a rock crevice where it settles in to rest
- Curious interactions with the clean-up crew, including perching near (and sometimes on) larger shells
To do well, provide plenty of live rock with small crevices for perching, grazing, and retreating. Offer vegetable-based foods (including preparations that contain marine algae) so it can graze and take supplemental feedings throughout the week. It does best with peaceful tankmates that allow it to feed and perch openly.
Will my Two Spot Blenny only “graze,” or will it learn to eat prepared foods?
Many settle in fastest when food is offered in ways that mimic grazing—algae-based foods and small portions placed where they can pick at it between perches.
Why does it keep returning to the same hole or ledge?
This species commonly establishes a favorite crevice as a resting spot and will use it as a consistent base between grazing trips.
Can I keep it with another blenny if the tank has lots of rockwork?
In larger, rock-rich aquariums, hobbyists often focus on giving each blenny its own “perch zones” so they can spread out naturally.
Is it normal for it to ignore food that’s floating in the water column?
Yes—many blennies are more comfortable picking food off surfaces than chasing it mid-water, so attaching or placing foods on rock can improve feeding response.
What foods count as good “greens” for this blenny?
Look for frozen or dried foods that include marine algae/spirulina and other vegetable matter, offered alongside its natural grazing behavior on rockwork.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
