The Bigeye Soldierfish (Myripristis sp.) is a reef-associated soldierfish known for its oversized eyes, red body tone, and fine pale edging along the fins that reads clearly under aquarium lighting. It tends to spend the day tucked into rockwork and ledges, then becomes more visible in lower-light periods when it cruises open water looking for food.
What You’ll Observe:
- Choosing a favorite cave or overhang and returning to it between “patrols”
- More activity as the lights dim, including slow, confident laps around the rockwork
- Quick, accurate strikes at meaty foods drifting in the water column
- Hanging under ledges or near shaded areas, especially once it feels established
To help your Bigeye Soldierfish settle in, provide plenty of live rock structure with multiple caves and shaded swim-throughs. Offer small meaty foods at dusk and after lights-out so it can feed in its natural rhythm, and keep feeding consistent so it learns your schedule. In roomy systems, it can be kept with other calm, appropriately sized tankmates for a relaxed nighttime display.
Why does my Bigeye Soldierfish hide most of the day?
This is normal behavior for soldierfish—many spend daylight hours under ledges and become more active in dimmer light. Over time, most pick “home” caves and follow a predictable routine.
What’s the easiest way to make sure it actually gets its share of food?
Feed a portion after the main lights go down so food stays in the water column longer and competition is lower. Using a turkey baster to send a little food toward its preferred cave also works well.
Will it take frozen foods, or does it need live foods first?
Many transition onto frozen meaty foods readily once they recognize feeding time. If yours is slow to start, a short “starter” period with more enticing foods can help establish the routine.
Can I keep more than one together?
It’s often done successfully in larger aquariums when there are multiple caves and overhangs to claim. Introducing them at the same time typically leads to the smoothest settling-in period.
Will it eat very small fish or tiny ornamental shrimp?
It usually focuses on meaty foods you provide, but very small, bite-sized tankmates can be viewed as food by larger individuals. Choosing tankmates that aren’t snack-sized keeps the community dynamic straightforward.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
