The Neon Wrasse (Halichoeres garnoti), also called the Yellowhead Wrasse, is a Western Atlantic Halichoeres wrasse known for dramatic color changes from juvenile to adult. Adults show a yellow-to-golden head with darker patterning, while juveniles are yellow with a bright blue “neon” stripe along the side.
What You’ll Observe:
- Foraging behavior as it picks through rockwork and along the sand line for tiny invertebrates
- A consistent “sleep routine,” diving into the sand at lights-out and reappearing after lights-on
- A noticeable color shift over time as it matures out of the juvenile neon-striped phase
- Short bursts of speed followed by cruising laps through open areas and around the reef structure
To help it settle in, provide an established tank with open swimming room, stable rockwork, and a sandy area it can use for sleeping. Offer a mix of frozen meaty foods (like mysis and other small marine blends) so it can feed confidently in the water column while still hunting naturally between meals. A tight-fitting lid helps keep its active, exploratory behavior contained.
Why did my Neon Wrasse vanish right after I added it?
Many Halichoeres wrasses bury in the sand to sleep and may stay hidden for days (and sometimes longer) while they settle into a new routine.
Does the “neon stripe” stay, or will it change color?
The neon-striped look is typical of juveniles; as the fish matures, the adult pattern develops and the overall appearance shifts significantly.
Is it normal for this wrasse to sleep in the sand every night?
Yes—sand-sleeping is a common, repeatable behavior for Halichoeres wrasses, and many hobbyists notice they pick a general area to dive into at bedtime.
Do I really need a lid if it seems calm?
Many wrasses are capable jumpers, and hobbyists often choose a tight-fitting cover to prevent losses during quick dashes, startle responses, or nighttime movement.
Will it bother shrimp and snails?
Some keepers report Yellowhead/Neon Wrasses focus heavily on small mobile invertebrates, while others have mixed outcomes depending on the individual fish and how the tank is fed.
