The One Stripe Fanged Blenny (Meiacanthus ditrema) is a small reef-associated fang blenny from the western Pacific that’s known for its single stripe pattern and perch-and-dart behavior around rockwork. It adds steady movement to the lower and middle areas of a reef tank while still spending time posted up on a favorite ledge.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on rock faces, then making short, quick swims between nearby hiding spots
- Picking a “home base” hole or crevice and returning to it throughout the day
- Coming out more boldly once it recognizes your feeding routine
- Hovering in the water column for food, then dropping back to a perch
Provide live rock with multiple crevices so it can settle into a consistent resting spot. Offer a mixed diet of small meaty foods plus quality pellets or frozen blends, and feed in smaller portions so it gets a fair share. Maintain a calm community setup so it spends more time out in the open.
Does this fish usually stay hidden after you add it?
Many settle into a favorite crevice quickly, then spend more time perching in the open once they learn the tank’s routine.
Can I keep two together in the same aquarium?
Some hobbyists do, but it tends to go best as a single specimen unless you’re adding a known pair or introducing both at the same time with plenty of separate bolt-holes.
Will it bother ornamental shrimp and other small clean-up crew?
Most keepers report them focusing on prepared foods; very tiny shrimp can still be treated as food by many reef fish, so size and timing matter.
Should I worry about getting bitten during routine tank maintenance?
They’re typically not interested in hands—most issues come from a fish feeling trapped in a corner or net.
Do fang blennies jump?
They can launch when startled, especially in new surroundings, so a tight-fitting lid helps them settle in confidently.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
