The Yellow Spotted Dwarf Scorpionfish (Sebastapistes cyanostigma) is a small dwarf scorpionfish with a mottled pink-red to brown base color and clear yellow spotting. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, it spends much of its time perched in rockwork where its pattern blends naturally into the background.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on ledges and in crevices, shifting spots rather than cruising open water
- Short, quick strikes at meaty foods once it recognizes a consistent feeding station
- More movement around dusk and after lights-out as it repositions to a new ambush perch
- “Statue-like” pauses between hunts, followed by brief bursts of motion
Provide an established aquarium with plenty of caves, overhangs, and stable perches so it can settle in and watch for food. Offer small meaty items (mysis, chopped shrimp, krill, or clam) and use a feeding stick or tongs to place food near its perch until it recognizes the routine. Keep tankmates sized appropriately, and use a specimen container for transfers to protect its venomous spines.
Is it normal for this fish to sit in one spot for long periods?
Yes—this species often “posts up” on a favorite perch and waits for food to pass by.
How can I transition it onto frozen foods?
Start with scent-rich frozen meaty foods and deliver them to the same spot with a feeding stick so it learns where meals appear.
When is the best time to feed it?
Many keepers get the most consistent response in the evening (or at lights-down), when it naturally becomes more alert.
Do I need a lid even though it doesn’t swim around much?
A secure cover is still helpful because it can move in sudden bursts and may launch during feeding or startle moments.
Can I keep more than one together?
It’s often best to add them at the same time and provide multiple perches so each fish can claim its own resting spot.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
