The Marine Betta (Calloplesiops altivelis), also called the Comet, is a cave-dwelling predator with a dark body covered in fine white spotting and a bold false “eye spot” near the tail. It typically uses rockwork ledges and crevices for cover and is most visible in lower-light periods around dusk.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spending daylight hours tucked under ledges with fins extended
- Short, slow patrols near the rockwork as lights ramp down
- A “head-down” posture with the tail ocellus presented outward
- Target-feeding behavior—tracking food that drifts close to its cave entrance
For best results, provide a 55-gallon (or larger) aquarium with multiple caves and overhangs so it can choose a favorite shelter. Start feeding in a calmer, dimmer period of the photoperiod, then transition to frozen/thawed meaty items (like mysis and chopped shrimp) once it’s settled. In a reef, it’s coral-safe, but plan livestock around its predator instincts with very small ornamental shrimp.
Why does my Marine Betta “point” its tail out of a cave like it’s facing backward?
That posture is normal; it commonly uses crevices and presents the tail-side ocellus outward as it rests.
How long does it usually take before I see it regularly in the open?
Many settle into a routine where they appear most during ramp-down/ramp-up lighting and when they learn your feeding schedule.
Can I keep two Marine Bettas together?
It’s most predictable to keep a single specimen unless you intentionally acquire an established pair; otherwise, give plenty of caves so they can avoid each other.
Will it take food from tongs or a feeding stick?
Many do—offering food near the same rockwork opening helps it associate that spot with feeding.
Is it normal for it to ignore fast, splashy feeding at the surface?
Yes; they often focus on food that drifts closer to their shelter zone rather than competing at the top.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
