The Yellow Slingjaw Wrasse (Epibulus insidiator) is an Indo-Pacific wrasse often seen in a yellow phase, with an extendable “sling” jaw it uses to pick prey from tight spaces in rockwork. It’s an active, open-water cruiser that also spends time working the reef face and caves.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady swimming laps with frequent pauses to inspect crevices and overhangs
- Quick “jaw extension” strikes while hunting through the rockwork
- Noticeable color shifts over time, especially as it matures
- A consistent day-time routine with a preferred sleeping spot chosen in the aquascape
Provide a spacious tank with open swimming room plus sturdy rockwork with multiple pass-throughs. Offer meaty frozen foods in smaller portions more than once per day so it can stay active and engaged at feeding time, and use a secure lid to support confident movement around the aquarium.
Why does mine look yellow one day and darker the next?
This species can shift shade with mood and maturity, and long-term color changes are common as it grows.
Is the jaw supposed to stay tucked under the head most of the time?
Yes—most of the time the jaw is retracted, and it extends briefly during feeding or hunting.
Will it “claim” one sleeping spot?
Many individuals pick a repeatable resting spot and return to it each evening once settled.
How long does it take to recognize prepared foods?
Many start by taking frozen meaty foods first, then become more predictable at feeding once they learn the routine in your tank.
Do they behave differently once they get larger?
As they mature, they often become bolder at feeding time and spend more time patrolling the rockwork and open lanes.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
