The Monster Shrimpgoby (Tomiyamichthys oni) is a larger shrimp-associated goby from the western Pacific that perches at a sandy burrow entrance and watches the open water. It reaches about 4 inches and is known for its “watchman” posture and close burrow-oriented lifestyle.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering at the burrow entrance between feedings
- Short dashes back to cover when startled
- A regular “home base” it returns to daily
For best results, provide a sand bed with a few small rubble pieces so the burrow can be reinforced, and make sure rockwork is stable on the bottom glass before sand goes in. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and other fine frozen foods) so some reaches the burrow area consistently.
Does it need a pistol shrimp to do well?
It does fine solo, but a shrimp partner adds constant burrow activity.
How deep should the sand be?
A couple inches of sand with some rubble works well for burrows.
Will it stay in the open all day?
Most of its activity stays centered around one chosen burrow zone.
Can I “choose” where it burrows?
You can place rubble there, but it typically picks its own spot.
Is it safe with tiny ornamental shrimp?
Most are fine, but very small shrimp can be tempting as it grows.
We source from vetted suppliers known for healthy, long-lived specimens.
