The Rhinoceros Leatherjacket (Pseudalutarius nasicornis) is an Indo-West Pacific filefish known for its “rhino” forehead profile and its ability to blend into weedy, soft-coral, and seagrass-like surroundings. Adults reach about 19 cm (about 7.5″) total length, making it a solid choice for medium-to-larger marine aquariums with plenty of structure.
What You’ll Observe:
- Slow, precise swimming using its fins, with short bursts when it decides to reposition
- A preference for staying close to rockwork and décor where it can “disappear” into the background
- A common response of holding a vertical, head-up posture when approached
- Frequent “sampling” behavior—pecking at surfaces as it explores
Provide live rock, branching/leafy décor, and calm retreats so it can settle into a comfortable home base. Offer a varied menu of meaty frozen foods along with some vegetable-based options, and feed consistently so it learns your feeding routine quickly. Filefish are often best enjoyed in a layout that gives them cover and easy foraging lanes through the rockwork.
Does this fish “play dead” or hide upright?
A vertical “freeze” posture is commonly reported and is part of how many filefish avoid attention; most individuals do it less as they get used to the tank.
Will it nip at soft corals even if it eats frozen foods well?
Some individuals still sample soft corals (especially fast-growing softies) as they explore, while others ignore them; many keepers treat this as normal filefish behavior that varies by specimen.
How do I get it to recognize prepared foods as food?
Many keepers start with small meaty foods (like finely chopped seafood or frozen blends) offered in the same spot daily, then expand variety once it joins feeding consistently.
Is it normal for a leatherjacket to “park” itself in rockwork at night?
Yes—filefish commonly wedge into a preferred nook to rest, and they often pick a consistent sleeping spot once established.
Will it bother ornamental shrimp during feeding time?
In mixed tanks, keepers often report the fish is more interested in the food itself than in chasing shrimp, but it may investigate anything moving near the feeding area.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
