The Crown Squirrelfish (Sargocentron diadema) is a reef-associated Indo-Pacific squirrelfish recognized by red-and-silver striping, a darker dorsal fin with a pale streak, and large reflective eyes built for low light. Its adult size and bold pattern make it an easy fish to spot once it settles into your rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Holding position under ledges, then making short patrol laps
- Quick, direct strikes at passing food
- Hovering in place with a steady “watching” posture
- Becoming more visible as it learns the tank’s routine
Build a rockscape with multiple tight retreats so it can choose a secure perch. Offer meaty frozen foods like mysis and chopped shrimp in bite-size pieces, and keep feeding consistent so it develops a predictable routine. In mixed communities, it does best when it receives its share of food without having to compete at every meal.
Will it stay hidden during the day?
Many keepers report it’s most visible during dusk/blue-light periods, and it shows itself more often after it recognizes the daily routine.
Can I keep more than one Crown Squirrelfish?
It’s commonly kept singly; hobbyists also report that multiples can show more tension as available space gets tighter.
Does it eat pellets or only frozen food?
Most discussions center on frozen meaty foods; some individuals learn to take prepared foods after they associate you with feeding time.
Why does it ignore food that sinks?
A common tip is to keep food moving in the water column, since many squirrelfish key in on motion when feeding.
Do I need to change my light schedule to see it more?
Some reefers use a longer “dusk” ramp or extended low-intensity viewing period instead of flipping the whole schedule.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
