The Green Serosa Dottyback (Pseudochromis sp.) is a compact reef fish that helps with pest control by actively hunting small worms and other tiny hitchhikers within the rockwork. Its green-toned coloration and streamlined dottyback shape stand out best when it makes quick passes in and out of caves and crevices.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, fast “dash-and-hover” swimming as it patrols a favorite section of rock
- A consistent routine of weaving through the same tunnels and overhangs it claims as home
- Direct, confident interactions at the front glass when it recognizes feeding time
- Perching behavior—hovering inches above the rock as it watches the tank
How to Succeed: Provide an aquascape with multiple caves and tight swim-throughs so it can establish a home base and still retreat between patrols. Offer a variety of small meaty foods in a consistent spot so it learns where meals appear, and keep tankmates that won’t constantly crowd its chosen rock zone.
Is it normal if I don’t see it much during the first week?
Yes—many dottybacks settle in by staying deep in the rockwork at first, then gradually show up more often once they learn the tank’s rhythms.
Will it bother ornamental shrimp even if it’s “reef safe” with corals?
It can treat very small shrimp as food, while still ignoring corals; keepers often plan shrimp choices and shrimp size accordingly.
Can I keep two Green Serosa Dottybacks together?
Sometimes, but success is most common with a confirmed pair introduced together; two random individuals often sort out dominance quickly.
Why does it “hover” and stare into holes in the rock?
That’s typical hunting behavior—dottybacks spend a lot of time inspecting crevices for tiny moving prey and investigating new scents in the tank.
Do I need a lid even if the tank has a rim or partial cover?
A tight-fitting mesh lid is a good idea; dottybacks are capable of sudden, fast dashes that can end in an unexpected jump.
