The Blochii Surgeonfish (Acanthurus blochii), often called the Ringtail Tang, is a large herbivorous tang that spends the day grazing algae films and helps provide steady algae control in big reef aquariums. Adults are bluish-grey with yellow-brown spotting and a pale ring at the base of the tail.
What You’ll Observe:
- Long, continuous cruising laps across open areas with frequent short stops to graze
- Regular “browsing routes” where it revisits the same rock faces and hard surfaces
- Confident, in-the-open behavior once it recognizes the tank as its territory
- Color intensity that can look different under various lighting and at different times of day
For best results, provide an established aquarium with plenty of live rock plus wide, open swimming lanes. Offer marine algae on a clip several times per week (and more often if your tank is low on natural growth), along with herbivore pellets and mixed frozen foods. With stable water parameters and consistent feeding, it settles into a predictable grazer-and-cruiser routine.
Why does my Ringtail Tang sometimes look much darker than usual?
Many tangs can shift tone with mood, lighting, and time of day; a darker “night” or “stress” look can be normal if it returns to its usual color afterward.
Does the white “ringtail” marking always stay bright?
The tail-base ring/bar can vary in intensity between individuals and can look more or less obvious depending on lighting and coloration at the moment.
Will it pick at sand, or only graze rock?
Keepers often notice it grazing low surfaces and “film” areas; in larger systems it may also work sandy patches where algae collects.
How do I make sure it gets enough algae when the tank looks very clean?
Use a veggie clip schedule (small amounts offered repeatedly) so it can graze naturally across the day instead of relying on one big feeding.
Can it be kept with other tangs in a large reef?
In very large tanks, hobbyists usually have the best results by planning introductions carefully and minimizing “look-alike” body shapes so each fish has its own space.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
