The Dussumier Tang (Acanthurus dussumieri), also called the Eyestriped Surgeonfish, is a large Acanthurus tang known for orange eye markings and fine blue line patterning across the body. It spends much of the day cruising open water and picking at algae and fine detritus on rock and sand.
What You’ll Observe:
- Long, steady laps across the front of the aquarium and around rock islands
- Regular grazing passes that keep it moving and engaged throughout the day
- Short “display” moments where colors sharpen during busy activity
Provide substantial, unobstructed swimming lanes with large live-rock zones for grazing and break-up points. Offer algae sheets on clips plus a rotation of prepared foods so it stays active and focused at feeding time.
Is it normal for its pattern to “switch on” at times?
Many keepers notice stronger lines and contrast during activity or displays.
Why does it chase a magnet or its reflection?
Some individuals posture at moving tools or shiny surfaces.
How fast do they outgrow the “juvenile tang” look?
The adult face and body pattern becomes clearer with size.
How do you tell it apart from similar Acanthurus?
Look for the eye stripe and the fine, wavy line network.
Can it be the “boss” fish in a large community?
In big systems it often sets the pace without constant chasing.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
