The Flameback Angelfish (Centropyge aurantonotus), also called the Brazilian/Caribbean Flameback or “fireball” angelfish, is a small pygmy angelfish with a deep blue body and a bright golden-orange head and back. It spends the day weaving through rockwork and making short, confident loops in the open while it grazes.
What You’ll Observe:
- Frequent “picking” on live rock surfaces as it searches for natural growth to graze
- Quick patrol loops through its favorite caves and swim lanes throughout the day
- A consistent routine of returning to the same crevice or ledge to rest between foraging
- Strong interest in food at feeding time, often learning where food enters the tank
For best results, provide established live rock with multiple pass-through hiding spots so it can graze and retreat naturally. Offer a varied omnivore menu (meaty frozen foods plus foods that include marine algae) in small portions across the day so it stays active and engaged. A stable layout with clear territory lines helps it settle in and show natural behavior.
Will a Flameback Angelfish stay visible, or hide a lot at first?
Many keepers report it chooses one “home” cave early on, then becomes more visible as it learns the tank’s routine and feeding schedule.
Is it normal for a Flameback Angelfish to ignore frozen foods at first?
Some individuals start by grazing rocks heavily; offering smaller items (like finely chopped meaty foods) in repeated, brief feedings often helps it transition.
Do Flamebacks tend to pick at certain corals more than others?
Hobbyists commonly mention the most interest in fleshy LPS pieces; many people simply observe its grazing habits and place high-value corals accordingly.
Can you keep two Flameback Angelfish together long-term?
Pairs or harems are sometimes kept when introduced carefully in a larger, rock-rich setup, but most aquarists plan the grouping from the start rather than adding a second later.
Do Flameback Angelfish ever “vanish” in a reef tank?
It’s widely reported that they can wedge deep into rockwork to sleep or retreat; tight covers and a rockscape with accessible swim-throughs make day-to-day viewing easier.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
