The Bynoe Sleeper Goby is a sand-sifting goby that keeps the substrate turned over by taking mouthfuls of sand, filtering out edible particles, and releasing the clean sand back down. It has a low-profile goby shape with tan-to-brown patterning that blends into sandy bottoms, and it’s found across the Indo-West Pacific.
What You’ll Observe:
- Repeated “scoop, sift, and spit” feeding loops across open sand, with small sand mounds forming in favorite areas
- Frequent perching on the sand near rock edges, then short darts to the next spot to sift
- Sand grains drifting in the water column while it works, especially in the first few days
- A consistent route or territory on the bottom as it settles into a daily routine
To help your Bynoe Sleeper Goby do its job, provide a fine sand bed with open areas to work and stable rockwork along the edges for quick shelter. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, enriched brine, and finely chopped seafood) in multiple small feedings so it can combine prepared foods with natural sandbed foraging. Maintain a snug-fitting lid so it stays in the tank during sudden dashes.
Does this goby actually eat cyanobacteria (“cyano”) off the sand?
It may reduce the look of cyano by constantly turning the top layer of sand, but it primarily feeds on microfauna and edible particles in the substrate.
Why is it dropping sand on my rockwork or coral plugs?
Sand release is part of normal sifting. Many hobbyists redirect flow or keep frags off the sand zone so the goby’s work area stays on open substrate.
Will it pair with a pistol shrimp like some “watchman” gobies?
This species is typically kept as a substrate sifter rather than a shrimp symbiont. It’s more likely to use a chosen resting spot or shallow burrow than maintain a shared shrimp tunnel.
Where did it go—can it stay hidden for days?
After introduction, it often picks a preferred sleeping/resting area and may spend long stretches out of sight, then resume a predictable sand-sifting route once settled.
Can I keep more than one Bynoe Sleeper Goby?
Most hobbyists keep sleeper gobies singly unless they’re a confirmed pair. In larger systems, spacing and distinct sand zones help reduce overlap in bottom territories.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
