The Corazons Damsel (Pomacentrus vatosoa) is a reef-safe damselfish from Madagascar known for its pearly white body and bold black markings, including an eye stripe and spot pattern. It stays compact at about 2 inches, making it a good fit for reef tanks that have defined rockwork zones and plenty of crevices.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spends much of the day hovering and weaving around a favorite rock section, then making short patrol swims nearby
- Becomes noticeably more active at feeding time and readily comes out into the open for food
- Often chooses a specific nook or crevice as a home base, returning there between swims
- In mixed fish groups, it may do brief chasing to define its space, then settles into a consistent routine
To succeed with this species, provide a rockscape with multiple small caves and sight breaks so it can claim a small area without controlling the whole tank. Offer a mix of pellets/flakes plus frozen foods like mysis or brine, fed in small portions to keep it engaged and active. Choose compatible tankmates that hold their own during feeding and give it room to establish a stable territory.
Can a Corazons Damsel be kept as a pair?
Some hobbyists report seeing them singly or in pairs in the wild and in the trade, but in aquariums it usually works best to plan space and rockwork for each fish to claim its own corner.
Does it eat prepared foods quickly, or does it need training?
Most keepers report it takes prepared foods well; offering a mix of small pellets/flakes and frozen foods helps it stay consistent at meals.
Is short chasing behavior normal with this fish?
Yes—brief chasing can be part of how it sets boundaries, especially early on; once the tank’s map is established, behavior often becomes more predictable.
Will it disappear into the rockwork for long periods?
It commonly picks a crevice as a home base and may spend time tucked in, then reappear reliably for feeding and patrol swims.
Is it better to add it early or later in a community reef?
Many hobbyists prefer adding territorial fish before very passive species so the tank’s social structure forms smoothly, with multiple hiding spots available from day one.
