The Red Stripe Anthias (Pseudanthias fasciatus) is a deepwater anthias known for a heavier, “stocky” profile and bold striping. Females are typically orange with a red stripe that runs most of the body length, creating a clean, high-contrast look in the water column.
What You’ll Observe:
- Regular midwater hovering and short dashes into open water, especially around rock faces and ledges
- Quick, “snap-and-grab” feeding in the water column when small foods are offered
- More visible activity as it gets comfortable with your lighting and daily schedule
- Natural interest in overhangs and crevices, especially as lights ramp down
Provide open swimming space with plenty of rockwork ledges and shaded retreats. Offer a variety of small meaty foods in multiple small feedings so it can feed the way anthias naturally do. In larger aquariums, a small group (one male with multiple females) often brings out more consistent, natural display behavior.
Do Red Stripe Anthias change sex over time?
Like many anthias, they can transition within a social group, with the dominant fish showing more “male” traits over time.
What foods usually get them eating quickly in a new tank?
Many hobbyists start with small frozen options (mysis, finely chopped blends, roe/zooplankton-sized foods), then mix in small pellets once the fish is regularly taking frozen.
Is it better to add a group all at once, or one at a time?
For anthias groups, adding them together (or within a short window) is commonly used to help the fish settle into a pecking order more smoothly.
Can you keep more than one male Red Stripe Anthias?
In very large systems with ample space and multiple females, some keepers report success with more than one male, but most typical home setups run best with a single male.
What’s the easiest way to handle frequent feeding without being “stuck at the tank” all day?
A small-pellet auto-feeder (paired with at-least-once-daily frozen feeding) is a common approach for keeping feeding opportunities consistent.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
