The Brazilian Royal Gramma (Gramma brasiliensis) is a reef basslet from Brazil’s Atlantic reefs with a purple front half that blends into a yellow-to-orange back half. It stays close to rockwork and overhangs, adding steady color to the lower and middle areas of a reef tank.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a favorite cave or ledge and regularly hovering near the entrance
- Short, quick dashes into the water column during feeding, then returning to its spot
- Hanging at a slight angle (and sometimes upside-down) under shelves and overhangs
- Becoming a more consistent “out and about” fish as it settles into a routine over the first few weeks
Provide rockwork with a few shaded caves and crevices so your gramma can choose a home base. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, finely chopped seafood, and quality frozen blends) in portions it can grab easily. With a consistent feeding schedule and calm tank flow around its shelter, it typically settles in and shows natural, cave-associated behavior.
Does it spend days in one cave and then suddenly switch to a new spot?
Yes—many grammas rotate between a few preferred hideouts as they map the rockwork and settle into a routine.
Is it normal for a gramma to hover under a ledge upside-down?
Yes—hovering under overhangs at unusual angles is a common, natural behavior for grammas.
Will it learn to eat pellets, or is frozen food required long-term?
Many will take small pellets once they recognize them as food; mixing pellets into frozen feedings can help the transition.
Can I keep more than one Brazilian Royal Gramma in the same tank?
Sometimes, but success usually depends on having enough separate rockwork “homes” so each fish can claim its own space.
Do I need a lid—are grammas jumpers?
A covered top is a good idea; they can make fast, sudden dashes (especially during acclimation or at feeding time).
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
