The Gray Freckled Dogface Puffer (Arothron nigropunctatus cf.) is a dogface/blackspotted puffer with a rounded body, short “dog-like” snout, and a gray base color scattered with dark freckles that can vary in intensity. This Arothron puffer is widely kept in FOWLR setups, where its interactive feeding response and bold presence become the main focus of the tank.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruising the front glass at feeding time, then “perching” on rock ledges to rest between meals
- Learning routines quickly and watching activity outside the tank
- Using caves/overhangs as a regular home base, especially after lights change
- Taking larger, bite-sized foods confidently once settled in
To succeed long-term, provide open swimming room plus sturdy rockwork with an oversize cave it can turn around in easily. Offer a varied meaty menu and include hard-shelled items (like clams or shell-on shrimp) regularly so normal chewing helps manage beak growth. For transfers, guide it into a rigid container while submerged rather than using a net.
Why does my dogface puffer “sit” on rocks and look inactive?
Many keepers report a pattern of short cruising bursts followed by resting on a ledge while it digests; this is a common day-to-day posture.
What foods help keep the beak worn down naturally?
Hard items you can leave in-shell (like clam on the half shell) are commonly used so the fish can crunch and grind as it eats.
Will it usually accept frozen foods, or does it need live food?
Most specimens transition to frozen meaty foods; offering the same items consistently and using feeding tongs often speeds up the changeover.
Is it normal for a new dogface puffer to show interest in food but not actually bite?
Keepers often describe a short “settling in” phase; once the fish is comfortable with the environment and routine, it typically becomes more direct at feeding time.
Does a dogface puffer eat at night if it skips meals during the day?
This species is generally active during the day, so most successful feeding routines happen with daytime offerings on a consistent schedule.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
