The Ring Eye Pygmy Goby (Trimma benjamini) is a tiny reef goby known for its red-orange coloration and the distinct pale ring around the eye. It naturally clings to cave roofs and ledges, so it often perches under overhangs and may even rest on the aquarium glass in angled, “gravity-defying” positions.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering close to the rockwork, then making short dashes to a nearby perch
- Perching under ledges and overhangs rather than sitting on open sand
- Staying active around shaded caves and small crevices throughout the day
- Snapping up small food items as they drift through the water column during feeding
For best results, build an aquascape with plenty of live rock, small caves, and shaded ledges so your goby always has a comfortable perch. Feed a variety of finely sized meaty foods (small mysis, zooplankton-sized frozen foods, and similar) in multiple small offerings, and let some of the food pass through gentle pump outflow so it stays suspended and easy to intercept.
Why does it perch upside down under a ledge or even on the glass?
This is a normal behavior for this species, since it naturally clings to the roofs of caves and ledges and often chooses overhead perches.
What foods seem to “click” best once it’s settled in?
Most keepers have the easiest time when foods are small enough to drift: finely chopped frozen meaty foods and plankton-sized options it can pick from the water column.
Can I keep more than one Ring Eye Pygmy Goby?
Many hobbyists keep pairs or small groups; introducing multiple fish at the same time and providing lots of separate ledges helps them spread out naturally.
Why does it seem to “vanish” after I add it, then show up later?
It’s common for pygmy gobies to spend extra time under overhangs and in crevices at first; once it learns the tank’s daily rhythm (especially feeding), you typically see it more often.
Why is this fish sometimes sold under slightly different names or as “Trimma sp.”?
Trimma gobies can look very similar from species to species, so sellers and hobbyists often rely on small visual cues (like the eye ring) plus good photos to confirm an ID.
