The Flame Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus jordani) is a Hawaiian fairy wrasse known for a bright yellow-to-red body tone, red facial striping, and pronounced color difference between males and females. It stays relatively small (around 4 inches) and brings steady mid-water movement to reef tanks with open swimming room and rockwork to weave through.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruising the water column in short loops, then threading back through rockwork
- Quick “flashing” moments where fin color intensifies, especially around other wrasses
- A consistent daytime presence in the open, with brief check-ins to favorite hiding spots
- Fast, precise feeding in the water column when small foods are offered
To help it settle in, provide an established aquarium with a mix of open lanes and caves, and keep lighting and flow stable. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, brine, and similar fine frozen foods) plus quality pellets, and feed in smaller portions more than once daily. A tight-fitting lid helps keep this active wrasse in the display.
Does a Flame Wrasse do better alone, as a pair, or in a small group?
Most keepers enjoy them either as a single show fish or as one male with one or more females, where social interaction brings out more “display” behavior.
Where does a Flame Wrasse sleep at night?
They typically wedge into rock crevices or sheltered ledges and develop a consistent “bedroom” spot once they’re comfortable.
Why did my Flame Wrasse look more colorful at the store than at home?
Color often ramps up as the fish establishes a routine and feels secure; consistent feeding, calm tankmates, and a predictable photoperiod help color present more strongly.
Will it spend more time hiding at first?
It’s common for new arrivals to use the rockwork heavily at the beginning, then gradually spend longer stretches cruising in the open as they learn the tank’s rhythm.
Do I need an acclimation box for introducing one to a stocked tank?
Many hobbyists use acclimation boxes to let the wrasse observe tankmates and start feeding confidently before full release, especially in tanks with other active mid-water fish.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
