The Golden Sailfin Blenny is an algae-grazing blenny that spends the day picking at film and filamentous growth on rock and hard surfaces. Color can range from golden-yellow to darker brown/black, with a taller “sail” dorsal fin and small head tassels that give it a rugged, reef-rock look.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on rock ledges, then making short, quick dashes between favorite spots
- Regular grazing passes across the same rock faces as it forages
- Brief fin “sail” displays when it repositions or interacts with nearby fish
- A consistent routine of hopping, resting, and scanning the rockwork throughout the day
Provide mature live rock with open grazing areas and plenty of crevices so it can settle into a regular perch-and-forage pattern. Offer algae-based foods (like spirulina-rich blends) and occasional sheets of dried marine algae so it keeps steady body weight while it grazes. Stable parameters and a calm feeding schedule help it stay out in the open more often.
Why did my Golden Sailfin Blenny turn darker after going into the tank?
Color shifts are common during settling and can change with lighting, mood, and where it chooses to perch. As it establishes a routine, you’ll usually see a more consistent “base” color.
Will it actually eat nuisance hair algae, or only pick at film algae?
Many keepers report a mix: it tends to browse surfaces all day, and will focus more on whichever algae type is most available. Keeping several “grazing zones” on rock often helps it forage naturally.
How do I tell a true sailfin/highfin blenny from look-alike blennies that get mislabeled?
A true sailfin/highfin type is known for a noticeably taller dorsal fin profile and a “perch and hop” lifestyle on rockwork. Comparing the dorsal fin shape and head details (cirri/tassels) is often more useful than color alone.
Is it normal for it to pick one rock and act like it’s “their spot”?
Yes—many blennies choose a primary perch they return to throughout the day. With enough rockwork and line-of-sight breaks, they usually keep this behavior localized.
Do I need a tight lid for this species?
A cover is helpful for most reef tanks because quick dashes and startled jumps can happen with many active fish. Mesh tops are a simple way to keep airflow while reducing jump-outs.
