Bellus Angelfish (Genicanthus bellus) is a swallowtail angelfish known for clear male/female color differences and long, lyretail-style fin streamers. In reef aquariums it’s most often seen cruising in the open water column, where its patterning reads clearly even from across the tank.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady, mid-water swimming with frequent laps through open areas in front of the rockwork
- Quick “snap” feeding at suspended foods, especially once it learns your feeding routine
- A noticeable difference in look between sexes, with the display fish often becoming the tank’s focal swimmer
- More natural-looking behavior when kept with calm tankmates and plenty of water movement
To help yours settle in, provide a mature tank with open swimming room plus several rockwork “breaks” it can pass through. Offer a mix of small, meaty foods (and high-quality pellets) that stay suspended long enough for water-column feeding. A consistent routine and calm introductions help it spend more time out in the open.
Do Bellus Angelfish tend to stay in the open, or weave through rockwork?
Most keepers report a mix: open-water cruising with regular loops that pass close to rock ledges, especially when flow pushes food through the tank.
Is it better to buy a male, a female, or a pair?
Many hobbyists start with a female (or two) and let the social dynamic develop over time; established pairs are often kept when tank space allows.
Can I keep more than one Genicanthus angelfish together?
It’s commonly done when the grouping is planned, added with a clear “single show male” approach, and the tank has enough swimming room for social spacing.
Do they accept pellets quickly, or is frozen food usually required at first?
A frequent approach is starting with frozen items that drift (mysis/roe-style foods) and introducing pellets alongside so the fish associates them with the feeding response.
What’s a normal “first week” behavior after adding one?
A typical adjustment looks like shorter open-water laps at first, then longer, more confident cruising once it recognizes feeding times and traffic patterns in the tank.
