The Azores Chromis (Chromis limbata) is an Atlantic Chromis known for a gray-brown body with darker fin edging and a lighter tail base. In established reef tanks it reads as a calm, dark-toned open-water damselfish that stays visible above the rockwork and adds steady midwater motion.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering and cruising in the upper water column, then darting back to rockwork when startled
- Quick, coordinated “snap” turns when it tracks floating foods during feeding time
- Short standoff displays with a clear pecking order if kept with other Chromis
- Subtle color shifts through the day, especially around lights-on and lights-out
To succeed with Azores Chromis, provide open swimming lanes with plenty of rock structure to break up sight lines. Offer small foods that stay in the water column and feed in a few small portions so it can eat without rushing. It settles in best with reef tankmates that leave the midwater zone uncrowded.
Do Azores Chromis “school” in aquariums?
They usually form a loose shoal rather than a tight school, and the group often tightens up when something in the room spooks them.
Why do they sometimes spread out and then suddenly group back up?
Many keepers see them roam individually while grazing the water column, then regroup when they feel pressured by movement, feeding activity, or other fish.
Do they change color at night?
A darker, muted look after lights-out is commonly reported, and daytime coloration returns as they resume active swimming.
Where do they sleep?
Most wedge into rockwork or hover close to structure, picking a consistent “home pocket” once they’re settled.
Can I mix Azores Chromis with other Chromis species?
Mixing can work in larger systems, but many hobbyists find the most consistent behavior comes from keeping one Chromis species per zone so everyone reads the same body language.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
