Frilly Rhinopias (Rhinopias frondosa) is a weedy scorpionfish with frilled skin and fin edges that resemble macroalgae and reef rubble. It’s an Indo–West Pacific ambush predator that spends long stretches perched in place, waiting for food to pass by.
What You’ll Observe:
- “Perching” behavior—settling onto rock ledges or the sand and holding a pose for long periods
- Slow, deliberate repositioning using its pectoral fins rather than sustained swimming
- A focused feeding response—watching a food item closely, then striking quickly at close range
- Occasional thin “skin shed” events that leave the fish looking freshly textured afterward
Provide stable perches, gentle-to-moderate flow zones, and a calm feeding area so it can target food without rushing. Offer appropriately sized meaty frozen foods with feeding tongs so you can place the food right in its strike zone. Choose tankmates that are too large to be swallowed.
Does it prefer sand, rock, or both?
Most settle best when they have both: sand for low perches and rock ledges for higher perches they can rotate between.
Is it normal for it to “shed” a film of skin?
Yes—many keepers report periodic sheds where a thin layer comes off and the fish looks cleaner and more defined afterward.
Will it change color over time?
Color shifts are commonly reported, especially after it adjusts to a new tank background and lighting.
Can it be kept with ornamental shrimp or small fish?
It usually treats small, slender tankmates as food items; it does best with inhabitants that won’t fit in its mouth.
What’s the safest way to move it during maintenance?
Use a rigid specimen container instead of a net so fins and spines don’t snag, and guide it gently from perch to container.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
