Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus katherinae) is a reef-safe fairy wrasse known for its purple, red, white, and yellow coloration and constant open-water movement. Adult males display brighter colors than females, and the fish stays a manageable size for larger community reef tanks.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady cruising through mid-water with frequent laps around the rockwork
- Quick “inspection passes” over new frags, rock faces, and shaded swim-throughs
- Short bursts of speed at feeding time, often staying out in front of the glass
- Occasional color shifts and fin displays when it notices other active swimmers
To succeed with this species, provide an established aquarium with generous live rock for shelter plus open lanes for swimming, and keep a tight-fitting cover since wrasses are capable jumpers. Offer a variety of meaty foods (like mysis and other finely sized marine items) in regular, smaller feedings so it can browse throughout the day.
Will a female Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse turn into a male over time?
Like other fairy wrasses, social cues can influence which fish becomes the dominant, more colorful male in a group.
Does this wrasse sleep in the sand or in the rocks?
Fairy wrasses typically settle into the rockwork to rest at night rather than burying in sand.
Why does it “flash” or look extra colorful at certain moments?
Brief color intensification and fin displays are a normal part of how fairy wrasses communicate and posture, especially around other wrasses.
Can I keep it with other fairy wrasses or flasher wrasses?
Mixing can work well when body shapes and color patterns aren’t too similar, and many hobbyists get smoother introductions by using an acclimation box before full release.
Is it safe with cleaner shrimp and other ornamental inverts?
It’s considered reef safe, and it usually ignores larger ornamental inverts, but very small shrimp can still be viewed as potential food in some setups.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
