The Browncheek Blenny (Acanthemblemaria crockeri) is a small tube/barnacle-style blenny from the Gulf of California that spends most of its time posted in a tight rock crevice, watching the water column. Color is typically brown/tan with spotting, with a lighter face area that reads as a “brown cheek” look at aquarium viewing distance.
What You’ll Observe:
- A “peek-out” fish that stations in one favorite hole and tracks movement outside its shelter
- Quick, darting bursts to grab passing food, followed by an instant return to its crevice
- Regular perching with just the head visible, especially once it chooses a permanent home
- A noticeable “on-duty” posture’hovering at the entrance and reacting to feeding time
To do well with this species, provide plenty of small rock holes (barnacle clusters or shell-type openings work well) so it can claim a secure home. A well-established setup with lots of crevices supports more natural, out-in-front behavior at feeding time. Offer small meaty foods in the flow so it can dart out, grab, and retreat confidently.
Is it normal to only see the head most of the day?
Yes’many keepers mainly see the face at the entrance of a chosen hole, with short feeding sprints when food hits the water.
Do I need a lid or mesh top for a barnacle/tube blenny?
Many hobbyists prefer a covered top on nano tanks because small, fast fish can occasionally exit the tank during active periods.
Can I keep more than one in the same aquarium?
It’s commonly discussed that multiples can work when there are clearly separated “homes” available, so each fish can claim its own spot.
Why does it choose odd “homes” like pumps or tight equipment spaces?
Blennies are attracted to snug hidey-holes; hobbyists often redirect this behavior by providing a better, safer hole option (like a barnacle cluster) in the rockwork.
How do I make sure it gets its share of food in a community tank?
Many keepers have the best results by broadcasting small meaty foods into the flow near its home entrance so it can grab pieces during its quick darting runs.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
