Randalli’s Assessor Basslet (Assessor randalli) is a small, deep-blue assessor basslet with subtle yellow markings. It commonly hovers under ledges and cave mouths, and may swim sideways or upside down as it works the rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Claims an overhang as a home base and makes short loops nearby
- Hovers in place, then darts out to grab food
- Spends a lot of time in shaded rock crevices
- In a bonded pair, the male may hold eggs in his mouth
Provide rockwork with overhangs and a few separate caves so it can settle in and stay visible. Feed small meaty foods like mysis and finely chopped seafood on a steady schedule.
Is upside-down swimming normal?
Yes’many assessors naturally hover upside down under ledges.
Why does it “pick a spot” and keep returning there?
They use a chosen cave as a reference point between short patrols.
Will it stay under rockwork all day?
It often prefers shaded areas, but regularly comes out to feed once settled.
Can I keep two together?
Pairs tend to do best when there are multiple separated caves to choose from.
Do they learn prepared foods?
Many take frozen foods quickly and may accept small pellets once they recognize them as food.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
