The Arrowhead Basslet (Belonoperca chabanaudi), also called the Arrowhead Soapfish, is a cave-oriented predator with an angular, “arrowhead” profile and a mostly dark body pattern accented by a bright yellow area near the tail. It’s most at home in shaded rockwork where it can hold position under ledges and move out to feed.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spending long stretches tucked under overhangs, then making short, deliberate patrols around nearby rockwork
- A “sit-and-watch” hunting style, often waiting near caves before moving in for food
- Most activity centered on shaded areas and deeper pockets of the aquascape
- A consistent routine of returning to the same ledges and shelter zones each day
To succeed with this species, provide plenty of rock structure with caves and overhangs, leaving some open space in front of its shelter so it can comfortably stage for feeding. Offer appropriately sized meaty foods (like mysis, chopped shrimp, and similar items) on a steady schedule so it learns where food appears in your tank. Choose tankmates that are similar in size and comfortable around rockwork so the basslet can settle into a predictable territory.
Will it only eat after lights-out at first?
It’s common for new arrivals to take food during low-light periods; many individuals begin feeding more openly once they recognize a consistent feeding routine.
Is it normal for it to “disappear” into the rocks for days?
Yes’many keepers report that it chooses one or two specific ledges and spends most of its time there, especially during the first couple of weeks.
Does it need target feeding, or will it learn to eat from the water column?
A lot of hobbyists have better results when food is presented in a controlled spot (for example, right in front of its cave), then transition to normal broadcast feeding once it’s responding quickly.
Can it be kept with ornamental shrimp?
Some keepers avoid pairing soapfish with small shrimp because the fish is a crustacean hunter by nature; if shrimp are a priority, they usually choose larger, less “bite-sized” options.
Do soapfishes “release toxins” in a home aquarium?
They have a protective skin mucus like other soapfishes; calm acclimation and low-stress handling are commonly discussed as the best way to keep everything routine.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
