The Yellowfin Pygmy Angelfish (Centropyge flavipectoralis), also called the Moonbeam Angelfish, is a small dwarf angel with a darker body marked by metallic blue striping and distinct yellow pectoral fins. Native to the Indian Ocean around Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the Andaman Sea, it spends much of its time weaving through rockwork and stopping to pick at natural growth.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrol loops through caves and crevices, then short “darts” into the open before returning to cover
- Frequent grazing pauses where it pecks at film and tiny growth on rock surfaces
- A favorite sleeping/retreat spot it returns to at predictable times each day
- More “out front” behavior once it learns your feeding routine and the tank’s safe zones
Provide plenty of live rock and multiple hiding routes so it can browse and reset between patrols. Offer a varied mix of algae-based foods plus small meaty items and angelfish-style blends so it stays active and engaged at feeding time. In most aquariums, it does best as the only dwarf angel, with a stable layout it can comfortably claim as home.
Why does it hide a lot during the first few days?
Many keepers see this species spend most of its time deep in the rockwork at first, then expand its patrol route once it learns where the food and “escape paths” are.
How can I tell a Yellowfin Pygmy Angel from a Coral Beauty look-alike?
Hobbyists most often key in on the clearly yellow pectoral fins and the overall darker base coloration; comparing side-by-side photos usually makes the difference obvious.
Is it normal for it to peck at rocks all day?
Yes’constant “pecking” is typical browsing behavior, and it often continues even when the fish is also eating prepared foods well.
Can I keep a pair if I buy two at once?
Most discussions recommend planning for one per tank unless you have extra space and plenty of structure; when two work, it’s usually because the aquascape breaks up sightlines and creates separate zones.
Will it recognize the keeper or come out for feeding?
A common pattern is that it becomes noticeably more visible at feeding time and starts meeting you at the front once the daily routine is consistent.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
