The Potter’s Angelfish (Centropyge potteri), also called the Potter’s pygmy angelfish, is an orange dwarf angelfish with fine blue-to-black striping and blue edging along the fins. It is native to the Hawaiian Islands region and typically spends its day close to rock and coral structure where it can graze between short, quick dashes.
What You’ll Observe:
- Weaving through caves and arches, then pausing to pick at live rock and glass surfaces
- Short patrol loops around a favorite section of the aquascape, especially once it settles in
- Frequent “drive-by” grazing throughout the day rather than only feeding at one spot
- A bolder presence at feeding time after a consistent routine is established
Provide a mature aquarium with plenty of established live rock so your Potter’s Angel can graze naturally between meals. Offer a varied mix of frozen foods plus marine algae-based options on a clip, and keep feedings consistent so it learns where food shows up in your tank.
Is it normal for a Potter’s Angel to stay tight to the rockwork at first?
Many keepers report it starts out “structure-focused” and then expands its cruising pattern as it learns the tank’s routines.
What foods do hobbyists have the best luck with early on?
A mix of small frozen items (like mysis-style blends) plus sheets of marine algae placed near its usual grazing routes tends to get the most consistent response.
Does it need “stuff to pick at,” even if it eats prepared foods?
Most long-term success reports emphasize having mature rock with natural films/algae so it can graze between feedings.
Can I keep it with another dwarf angelfish?
Keepers most often recommend one Centropyge per tank unless the system is very large and the fish are introduced with a clear plan and lots of separate grazing lanes.
In reef tanks, what does “With Caution” usually look like day-to-day?
Many owners describe occasional exploratory pecks; consistent, frequent feeding and lots of natural grazing surface are commonly used to keep that behavior minimal.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
