Often sold as the Green Wolf Eel or Carpet Eel Blenny, Congrogadus subducens is an eel-shaped “giant dottyback” with a long, flexible body and a blunt, jawy head. Its base color is typically tan-brown with subtle green highlights, giving it a rock-and-rubble camouflage look in a reef tank.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spending long stretches with its head out of a favorite cave, then gliding out to patrol the rockwork
- Quick, accurate feeding strikes’especially once it learns your feeding routine
- A “lurker” style of swimming that hugs structure rather than cruising open water
- Strong interest in meaty foods delivered by tongs or a feeding stick
- Most activity around feeding time, with confident, deliberate movements when it’s out
For best results, provide a large rock structure with multiple caves and a tight-fitting lid, then establish a consistent “feeding spot” so it comes out predictably. Offer varied meaty marine foods (for example chopped clam, prawn, or fish flesh) in bite-sized pieces so it can swallow cleanly and settle back into its den quickly.
Is it actually an eel, or is “wolf eel” just a nickname?
It’s not a true moray or conger eel’hobbyists regularly point out it’s an eel-shaped dottyback that gets labeled as an eel or blenny in the trade.
Why do people say this fish is commonly misnamed?
A recurring theme is that it gets sold under multiple common names (green wolf eel, carpet eel blenny, eel blenny), which can make it hard to research unless you search the scientific name too.
Will it learn to take food from tongs/feeding sticks?
Many keepers report it quickly associates a tool with mealtime and will come forward once the routine is consistent.
Do they tend to “act hungry” again right after eating?
Keepers often mention fast digestion and a slim body profile’portion size is usually easier to judge by steady body condition over time than by looking for a long-lasting belly bulge.
Can this fish be kept in unusual places like a sump or overflow area?
Some hobbyists have temporarily housed them in large, stable sump sections, but the common takeaway is to plan for a secure, covered area and predictable feeding access.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
