The Banded Moray Eel (Echidna polyzona) is a reef-dwelling moray with alternating dark bands that help it blend into rockwork and crevices. This species is found across the Indo-Pacific and is often kept as a “barred moray” or “ringed moray” in home aquariums.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spending much of the day with its head visible from a favorite cave, then moving through rock tunnels as the tank dims
- Regular “patrol” loops along the rockwork, pausing to scent the water and investigate feeding areas
- A steady, rhythmic open-mouth breathing motion while stationed in its hide
- Becoming more interactive at feeding time, learning where food is presented and approaching with purpose
Provide a secure, eel-proof lid and stable rockwork with multiple caves sized for the eel to turn around easily. Offer meaty marine foods (like shrimp, squid, or fish) using feeding tongs or a feeding stick on a consistent schedule. With a well-planned aquascape and a calm routine, this moray settles into a predictable, interesting daily pattern.
Why does my moray “yawn” or sit with its mouth open?
Morays commonly breathe with an open-mouth motion to move water across their gills, especially while resting in a cave.
How long does it take for a new banded moray to start coming out more?
Many individuals spend the first days to weeks using one main hide, then gradually make longer patrols as they learn the tank’s routine.
Will it recognize a feeding routine?
Yes’over time, many morays learn where food is offered and will position themselves near that area when they expect a meal.
Is it normal for it to disappear for a day or two after a big feeding?
This is commonly reported; after a substantial meal, some morays stay tucked into their preferred cave and become less visible for a bit.
Can I keep more than one moray in the same aquarium?
Some hobbyists do in large systems with abundant caves; success tends to improve when each eel has multiple separate hiding options and feeding is well managed.
