The Highfin Moray (Gymnothorax pseudothyrsoideus) is a reef-dwelling moray eel from the Indo-Pacific, also seen in the trade under names like false spotted moray and yellow-lined reef-eel. Its body is typically pale yellow with irregular dark brown spotting, and it can grow to a substantial adult size.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spending long stretches posted in a rock crevice with just the head visible, watching the tank
- A predictable routine of becoming more active around feeding time and after lights dim
- Short, fast strikes at food, followed by backing into its preferred hiding spot
- Picking one or two favorite caves and returning to the same places day after day
Provide a secure, escape-resistant lid and rockwork with stable caves sized for an adult moray. Feed with tongs or a feeding stick using marine meaty items (shrimp, squid, fish flesh) so it can take food confidently without competing in the open. A larger aquarium footprint makes it easier to build a natural rock tunnel layout and gives tankmates room to keep respectful distance.
Will this eel’s patterning change as it grows?
Juveniles can show higher contrast edging and cleaner markings, and many hobbyists notice the pattern looks less crisp as the eel matures.
Why does it “yawn” a lot?
Morays often open and close their mouths to move water over their gills; it’s a normal resting behavior.
How do I keep it from disappearing for days?
Once it chooses a secure cave system, it may stay tucked back for long periods and then resume normal activity when it’s settled into a routine.
Is it normal for it to only accept food from tongs at first?
Yes’many keepers start with tong-feeding so the eel associates a consistent target with feeding time and comes out more reliably.
Can it be kept with other eels if the tank is large?
Some hobbyists attempt mixed-eel tanks, but most success stories involve lots of separate caves and a clear plan for how each eel gets fed without crowding.
We source from vetted suppliers known for healthy, long-lived specimens.
