The Rhino Blenny (Paraclinus sp.) is a small, bottom-oriented blenny with a marbled pattern that can shift quickly to match rock and sand. Hobbyists often describe it “walking” over the aquascape on its fins while it patrols crevices and ledges.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on rock faces and moving in short hops between hiding spots
- Quick color and pattern changes when it crosses from sand to rockwork
- Repeated “pecking” at the rock and sand as it searches for tiny foods
- Learning your feeding routine and occasionally taking frozen foods up close (often during target feeding)
To succeed with this species, provide a stable, covered aquarium with plenty of live rock and tight caves so it can stay low and secure. A sandy area helps it move naturally while it hunts. Offer small meaty foods and fine pellets, and keep natural microfauna available so it can graze between feedings.
Is rapid color-changing normal for a Rhino Blenny?
Yes’keepers regularly report fast shifts between pale and darker marbled patterns as it moves across different backgrounds.
Why does it look like it’s “walking” instead of swimming all the time?
This fish often uses its fins to perch and crawl along rockwork, then makes short dashes to the next spot, especially while hunting.
Will it actually eat frozen food, or does it only hunt pods?
Many will take frozen foods (like mysis) once settled, especially with calm, close-range feeding; they still spend a lot of time hunting tiny foods on the rocks.
Is it normal to barely see it right after adding it?
It’s common for it to stay tucked into rockwork at first and then become more visible as it maps out favorite perches and feeding routes.
Does it bother corals if it hangs around frags and colonies?
Reports commonly describe it picking at rock and sand while hunting, and some keepers note it may “nest” in protected spots like dense colonies without damaging tissue.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
