Randall’s Anthias (Pseudanthias randalli) is a deepwater anthias with pink, red, and yellow coloration. Males develop stronger striping in red and magenta, while females often show a yellow-toned face.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering and short, quick swims close to rockwork, with regular trips into open water at feeding time
- A “home-base” pattern where it returns to the same caves and ledges between swims
- In groups, a clear harem-style dynamic where one fish becomes the dominant male presence
- A strong midwater feeding response once it recognizes the tank’s feeding routine
To help it settle in, provide several shaded caves and ledges plus open swimming room along the rock line. Offer small zooplankton-style foods (like mysis and enriched brine) in multiple small feedings, and a refugium can add a steady stream of pods between meals.
Do Randall’s Anthias stay low in the tank compared to other anthias?
Many keepers report they spend more time tight to rockwork and ledges, which fits their deeper-water background and makes them a good “reef-slope” style swimmer rather than a constant open-water schooler.
How often do hobbyists actually feed anthias in real life?
A common approach is 2–3 feedings daily, and some hobbyists use an auto-feeder for extra small pellet/flake meals while keeping a frozen feeding as the “main” meal.
Will they take pellets, or are they frozen-only fish?
Keepers often start with frozen foods, then gradually mix in small pellets or crushed flake so the fish associates the water column with food throughout the day.
If I buy a trio, will one eventually become male?
Anthias are well-known for social sex change; in a small group, the dominant individual typically presents as the male over time, especially if no established male is present.
Is it normal for a new Randall’s Anthias to disappear into the rocks for stretches?
Yes’many anthias (and especially rock-oriented ones) can spend long periods inside their preferred caves and then reappear consistently when they learn the tank’s feeding schedule.
