The Ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita) is a long, narrow moray known for its ribbon-like dorsal fin and leaf-like nostrils. Color changes are common as it grows, with black juveniles, blue-and-yellow males, and yellow females all seen in the trade.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spending long periods posted at a chosen burrow with its head extended, watching the tank
- Short, smooth swims between shelters, then returning to the same hideout
- A strong “aiming” response at feeding time, striking forward from the burrow when food is presented
- Regular use of sand-level tunnels and tight caves as preferred rest spots
Provide several inches of sand topped with rubble and arrange rockwork (or PVC sections) to create multiple snug retreats it can choose from. For best results, offer small marine meaty foods by feeding stick/tongs near its preferred hideout and keep tankmates calm at feeding time so the eel can settle into a steady routine.
Is it normal for a ribbon eel to “disappear” and only show its head for days at a time?
Yes’many keepers report this as a normal daily pattern, with the eel choosing one primary burrow and rotating between nearby shelters.
What’s the easiest way to get consistent feeding behavior established?
A common approach is to feed in the same spot each time (often right at the burrow entrance) so the eel learns where food will appear.
Do ribbon eels change color, and does that mean it’s a different species?
Keepers regularly describe black-to-blue-to-yellow shifts as a normal part of growth and sex transition in this species.
How often should I feed once it is eating reliably?
Many hobbyists describe a “gorge and fast” rhythm’larger meals with rest days between’then adjusting based on the eel’s activity and interest.
Can I keep more than one ribbon eel together?
Some hobbyists report the best results when introducing multiple at the same time and providing multiple separate shelters so each eel can claim its own space.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
